About Helen O'Grady Malta

Who We Are

The international Helen O'Grady Academy is the only organisation of its kind in Malta offering a unique development programme that really works.

It was originally founded in 1979 in Australia, when a wonderful and visionary woman named Helen O'Grady, a trained teacher, drama teacher and actress, hired a hall and commenced affordable after school drama classes for young people from 3 years to adult.

Her aims provide a self-development drama programme encouraging

  • Enthusiasm, energy and a positive approach to life
  • Ongoing confidence
  • Self esteem
  • Skill in verbal communication
  • Effective social interaction
  • Performance skills

Helen’s legacy continues today, with over 100,000 students attending dynamic drama classes in 38 countries worldwide.

Our extensive curriculum, designed over the years by experts in their field, as well as our dynamic teachers and easily accessible venues, make this truly community-based organisation, with a strong emphasis on the care of all its students.

Students attend fast-moving classes for one hour a week, according to their specific age-group.

Parents Days and an annual production allow parents and friends to see the progress of the students first-hand.

The Malta branch of the Academy clinched the Franchisee of the Year award 2019 by Ms Helen O'Grady herself during a gala evening attended by the vice-mayor of Cardiff, Wales, UK.

The Helen O’Grady Academy offers a rich curriculum providing children as young as 3 with a developmental programme designed to increase confidence, self-esteem, communicative ability and creative talents. It is the only school of its kind that works with a set curriculum designed to help children develop clear, articulate speech, a fluent delivery and the ability to converse and discuss in a creative manner.

We are not in the business of turning children into stars, focusing instead on tapping into their inherent creativity and encouraging them to come out of their shells.  There are no end-of-term examinations, because children have enough academic pressure as it is and without exams, there can be no failures - only a motivating sense of achievement.

Having FUN remains key to the Academy’s success because we believe that “a lesson learned through fun … is never forgotten. It stays with us forever”.

There are no large-scale productions at the end of the year because there can only ever be one Peter Pan or one Cinderella and this can be counter-productive to the confidence growth of a child.

Parents will, however, be invited to attend a sample lesson towards the end of each term to see our teaching methods and witness, first-hand, the development of their children.

Meet The Teachers

We are extremely proud of its teachers. Our award-winning curriculum is excellent, so we ensure that we have equally brilliant teachers to implement our programme.

Our selection process for teachers is extremely stringent. We are meticulous when it comes to background screening – including police conduct reports and references from previous employers, as well as qualifications. Our teaching staff are certified first-aiders

All teachers follow a rigid training programme before final accreditation by the Academy. Because our teaching techniques are constantly developing, training is an on-going process and seminars and workshops are held before each term begins to ensure that we are always at the top of our game. Teachers are supervised throughout the scholastic year.

We do all this to ensure that our students get the very best! And their parents have peace of mind, knowing that their children are in safe hands.

“Our wonderful curriculum is only as good as the teachers that teach it. - and our teachers are brilliant” - Alan Montanaro (Director - Malta/Africa)
